Welcome to the December2007/January 2008 issue of the CyberArtisans monthly newsletter!

Our goal is to present information that will be useful to you as a website owner and as a user of the web. If these newsletters are useful, please forward this to a friend. To unsubscribe, follow the directions at the bottom of this email.

Online Help for the Weary Air Traveler

We don't have to tell you that air travel has become more difficult and less enjoyable. But we've found a website that can at least arm you with more information so you are better prepared when you head out to the airport.

FlightStats (http://www.flightstats.com) supplies a huge amount of information for the air traveler: flight delays, airport delays, weather, historical delays for your flight, and much more.

One feature we especially like is the airport delay index, which gives you a rough idea of how bad the delays are at the airport and whether they are increasing or decreasing. The site also shows reasons for the delay (weather, air traffic, etc.).

The site will also show you road delays around the airport (with the help of Google Maps), and you can check on the status of a specific flight. Much of this information was available previously but it required knowing about several different sources, some of them rather obscure. FlightStats puts it all in one place.

    The Malware Business

Virus and spyware writers are no longer what we used to call script-kiddies, that is, teenagers writing code for the fun and the challenge. Today's codewriters are part of organized crime. Frightening concept? Read on.

The people who write virus and spyware today do it as a business. They have business plans, yearly income projections, and investors. And they do it strictly for the money. They also have online forums (invitation only, of course) where they can trade ideas with each other and websites that offer software for infecting computers.

The biggest money-generators are the phishing expoits, which use various techniques to steal your passwords and then empty your bank accounts.

The best protections against all this are the same ones you've been hearing for years. Only now they are much more important:

    • Keep your computer updated using Windows Update or Microsoft Update (Microsoft Update combines Windows Update and Office Update).
    • Make sure you have antispyware and antivirus software installed and updated. Antispyware is actually more important than antivirus software right now, but both should be updated daily.
    • Surf carefully. Don't go to a website mentioned in an email from someone you don't know. And if you have any concern about a website, just stay away. There's some evidence that the Firefox browser is somewhat safer than Internet Explorer, but they both have known vulnerabilities.
    • Don't open email from unknown senders and never open an email attachment that you have any suspicion about even if it's from someone you know.
    • Back up your system often. A few newsletters ago we mentioned the Mozy backup system, which is free for systems with less than 2 GB of data. With this service available, there's simply no excuse for anyone with a broadband connection to not back up anymore

    What is Hosting?

Web folks have a nasty tendency to toss out technical terms without a thought as to whether anyone understands them and "hosting" is one of those. Most people understand that hosting has something to do with making your website visible to the world. But that's a very small part of the story.

CyberArtisans contracts with various hosting services to make your website visible to the world. The details are complex and not very interesting except to the techies of the world, but suffice it to say that we take hosting very seriously. We work hard to find good safe places for your website where it will be visible for all to see whenever they want to see it.
