Welcome to the September 2007 issue of the CyberArtisans monthly newsletter!

Our goal is to present information that will be useful to you as a website owner and as a user of the web. If these newsletters are useful, please forward this to a friend. To unsubscribe, follow the directions at the bottom of this email.

    Website Clipping Software

You're surfing some shopping sites looking for a specific item. You go to several vendors, but by the time you get to the 5th one you've forgotten what the price and terms were for the first two. Now what?

Now is the time to download Hewlett Packard's free Smart Web Printing Software. Yes, it's called Web Printing software, but even if you don't use the print function, you will find this a useful utility.

Smart Web Printing Software lets you select a part of a web page and paste it into a clip book maintained by the program. You can then go to another web page and select a part of that page to add to the clip book. After a while, you have a collection of the items you liked and you can go to the clip book to compare them.

If you want, you can print the clip book or create a PDF from it, which you can send to friends or print later.

There are a few caveats, of course. It only works with Windows. And it so far it only works with Internet Explorer 6 and 7, although a Firefox version is expect in 6 months or so. And occasionally it can't copy everything in the selection, depending, HP says, on how the page is generated.

The current version is good but a better version is coming the end of October. The improved version will allow you to add text to the clip book so you can make notes about the items you added.

A full review is available on a no-fee page of the Wall Street Journal. And the software itself is available on this page of the HP site. The updated version will be available at the same page late in October.

    Taskbar Shuffle

Are you the anal type who likes to have the items in the task bar in a certain order? Ever wish you could change the order of items in the task bar without shutting down and restarting your applications? Check out Taskbar Shuffle, a free utility located at http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm

Two version are available: a normal-installation version and a stand-alone version that doesn't require installation. The stand-alone version can be started, allowing you to shuffle the taskbar items, and then shut down so it doesn't hog memory or CPU cycles when you aren't using it.

To download the stand-alone version, find the link on their website that says "Download Taskbar Shuffle." Below that there is another link that says "Download the stand-alone version."

It's a nice compact piece of software that does only one thing but it does it well and without complications. Probably for geeks only, but you know who you are and we know you're out there.

    YouTube Videos

If you're feeling creative and you'd like to create a YouTube video instead of just watching them, the video camera manufacturers have a deal for you.

Several manufacturers have come out with video cameras that are:

    • cheap (mostly under $200)
    • work easily with YouTube and similar video sites
    • don't require huge amounts of disk space
    • did we mention that they're cheap?

The Wall Street Journal recently reviewed these cameras. The review is on a free page of the WSJ. The WSJ also reviewed some free and cheap video editing software that allows you to do some basic editing of the videos you create with these cameras.

And if you don't want to put the video up on YouTube, you might want to put it on your own website. Video is getting to be a very in thing for websites, and it's now even inexpensive.

One caution, however: Unless you are a professional videographer, expect these videos to look, well, amateurish. In some situations that's fine. If it's not fine, contact us -- we know videographers who can do a very professional job for you.
