Have a Happy New Year

A few years ago there was a a lot of talk about the "connected home" of the future. The idea was that you would somehow have your TV, computer, stereo, and game unit (Playstation II, XBox, etc.) all interconnected. You could control any of them from you computer, watch TV on your computer monitor (while working??!) or listen to your favorite radio station in Paris via the Internet and your house stereo -- which would, of course, have speakers and controls throughout the house.

Does your house work that way today? Neither does ours. But recently a technology writer for one of the major newspapers wondered whether he had missed out on the promised revolution. So at a major technology conference he assembled a few hundred of the world's top geeks and asked those who had achieved the promised nirvana to raise their hands. Nine hands went up. So there's no need to feel left behind if you still have to walk over to your stereo to turn it on.

Ever wish that you could work on a document without having to drag along a laptop or remembering to put it into a flash drive? Then try out writely.com. At this site you can sign up for a free account and use a web-based application that works remarkably like Microsoft Word. The files are stored on writely.com's website, so you can sign up from anyplace you find an Internet connection and work on your documents. You can upload documents that you have started on your desktop, and you can download documents to your desktop to be edited in Word. You can also share them online with specific people (specified by email address). Writely.com also will publish your document as a blog if you wish.

The product is currently in beta, so it's free (but remember that beta means it could still have bugs so don't trust it with vital data unless you download the document occasionally for safekeeping). Their plan, once the product is official, is to maintain a free version and offer a paid version with more features. It's an interesting idea that's worth watching.

Our best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.
